< What exactly is this for? Can you tell me more about it?
Thanks,
Joey
Joey this is a laser for the symptoms of rosacea. It has the combination
of two lasers being the Aura and the Lyra. The Aura gets the surface
blood vessels while the Lyra gets the deep blood vessels. There is no
down-time with this laser, meaning your face looking like Frankenstein
afterwards.
This laser has had positive results with many people. I chose it after
doing a lot of homework, but new lasers have come onto the market. Laser
seems to be the only way that some of us can get some relief!!
You can go to laserscope.com and read about it, and also find a doctor
in your area.
Hope this helps!
Good luck

Re: Birth control pill

2007-12-31 07:35:12

I've been on the diet for 26 days now. After about a week I saw minor
improvements in my skin. After 14 days of the diet, I had to stop
taking my birth control pill for a week. My face improved
dramatically. Although I've been used to having a better skin during
this type of week, it looked better than it had for a long time.
Ofcourse, I had to continue taking this pill again after a week, and
my skin broke out terribly. The improvements due to the diet were
completely gone. So I decided to stop taking the pill all together. I
had done this before, but I couldn't get the rosacea under control
then. Ofcourse, at that time I wasn't on a sugar free diet. Right now
my skin looks great, despite a slight sun burn.
I suppose the birth control pill messes up my hormones. My doctor
already implied some link between rosacea and hormones, but she didn't
know how to apply this knowledge to my condition. We experimented with
a different pill in the past, but that didn't seem to help. Right now
I'm curious as to what my skin will do during the next month or so,
ithout being on the pill and remaining to follow the rosacea diet. I'm
terrified these 3 days of lovely skin are temporary. So I'll try to
achieve a stable skin condition before I dare experimenting with the
diet.
And yes, staying away from sugar is difficult, but it is well worth
it!

Can you tell us where you went to get this done?

My Experience with Aura/Lyra

2007-12-29 23:16:12

Hello everyone,
Yesterday morning I had my first Aura/Lyra laser tx done. I was a little
nervous, but excited by the prospect that I may be on the road to some
relief.
She put some numbing gel over my entire face and let me sit there a
little while. Then my hair was covered and my eyes were protected. She
then put another gel over my face, this gel was thick and cold!
She explained that I might have some minor pain, like the popping of a
rubber band, Honestly I did not feel much at all, it was virtually
painless. Perhaps the numbing gel, I am not sure.
She then started with the Aura, and zapped my entire face, my nose and
cheeks were my main concern, but you must get the whole face done, as
the blood vessels work hand and hand. This took a little while, then the
Aura again but this was like a wand rubbing my entire face. She never
picked the wand up, it was one continuous motion going along my face.
Last but not least the Lyra. I have some questions to ask of the people
who have had this treatment done. I will ask them later on after I
explain what she did. She said this is the important one, it gets the
deeper blood vessels. She then put the wand on my cheeks and was just
concentrating on them. This concerned me and I asked, "are you going to
put the Lyra on my nose?" She said, "NO, it is too powerful and it might
erupted the skin". You see my nose is my problem, and I wanted to make
sure everything was done in that area.
So my question is this....Kristen/Tom/Predawn/ or any one else who has
experienced this. Is she correct? Is it true that the Lyra should not be
done on my nose? She only would use the Lyra on my cheeks. I am
confused.
My settings were very conservative, actually very low. Not even close to
what Dr. Lee recommends. We both decided this after my skin test. I plan
on having several and since laser is cumulative this was fine with me.
After the laser there was very little pain, some redness and no
swelling. She did ice my whole face down after the treatment. My face is
almost recovered back to normal today. I arranged to be off work today
as I was not sure what the outcome may be.
I will keep everyone up to date on my treatments. It is too early to see
any results, and I will definitely post any good results I have.
Hope this helps others, like me, that did not know what to expect before
during and after laser!!
If anyone would like to direct e-mail me it is fine!!
Have a flush-free day!
Pamela

Rozex

2007-12-29 11:02:56

I am new to this, but I have a question. I have sensitive skin and I
used metrogel once upon a time and it dried out my face very bad.
Than being pregnant, I opted not to used anything for awhile. The
doctor just prescribed for me Rozex (Metronidazole topical emulsion)
and said it wouldn't dry out my skin. Has anyone else used this and
how did it work for you? How long did it take to see results??? Did
it work a little right away, or was it irritating to start out with???

My love affair with ice cream started when I was just a wee child...In fact, it
was the first solid food I ever ate....So in honor of our break-up (even though
it was good for a while, it turned out to be an unhealthy relationship, and we
all know those cannot last), I refer to 'ice cream' with regards to the
following (attempted) jokes even though anything that's heavy in carbs and/or
sugar can be substituted for the word 'ice cream.'
With that....like our newly thin selves and our less rosey cheeks...enjoy!
What To Tell Our Families When They Give Us Ice Cream
No thanks. I just had a whole bunch of ice cream.
When?
My whole life! I'm taking a small break (30 days), making up for lost time
eating heatlhy.
What To Tell Our Grandmas When She Gives Us Ice Cream
I'm on a diet to help improve my skin. I want to look as radiant as you do when
I'm your age. (Delivery is key on this one as is being genuine.)
-or-
I'm trying an experiment for thirty days...Can I look almost as pretty as my
dear grandmother? (Note the words "almost as." It is imperative to remember
these words when you say this.)
-or-
I'm staying away from unhealthy foods for a month.
I want you and I to live twice as long as you've lived thus far.
(Say this VERY SLOWLY.)
-or-
Grandma! Sit down, relax, let me serve you and the rest of our family, sweet
thing!
(When she sits, serve her and the family, and conveniently run out when the time
comes to serve yourself.)
More jokes to come soon...If these jokes were not funny please reply to this
email and write "Rosacea Humorless Unsubscribe" in the Subject Heading.

Re: Doc prescribes steroids

2007-12-28 19:29:34

Brian, you are right, everything I have read about rosacea says that
steroids are NOT to be used, that steroids, alpha hydroxy acids,
retinol, and salicilic acid all make rosacea WORSE. I hope you have
a good rapport with your doctor and that he/she is open enough to
listen to what you want/don't want. If you are not allergic to sulfa
drugs then a short course of one of the sulfa based antibiotics
should settle the flare up, another antibiotic that works but slower
than the sulfa ones is Keeflex. Once the flare up is gone work on
lifestyle changes to keep it at bay and make it go away, avoid things
that make you flush or blush profusely, you know, things that make
your blood vessels go closer to the surface of your skin, like hot
water and saunas, sun, alcohol, caffeine, extreme cold, etc. and work
on your diet, cut back or cut out all refined sugars (white sugar,
corn syrup, maple syrup, honey, etc.) and switch from white flour to
whole wheat, from white rice to brown rice, from peeled potatoes to
skin on, etc. Watch your skin and see what foods make it flare up
and avoid those foods, spicey food often does it, as can MSG or
aspartame. I found that once I had started getting the rosacea under
control that diet was the biggest contributing factor to flare ups.
Good luck! And NO STEROIDS!

Doc prescribes steroids

2007-12-28 05:30:24

Hello, this is my first time to post here.
I had R. for about 7 years now. I'm using Metrocream - without any
real improvement. My doc has said I need to alternate one day with
metrocream and one day with Sodium Sulfacetamide, a sulfur based
drug. BUT FIRST, she wants to settle down the flare-up with a 3 week
period of topical steroids and a week of antibiotics.
Seems like I remember that R. sufferers are not to use steroids at
all. Am I correct in this?
Thanks
Brian

hi all, your friendly neighborhood lurker here again. it has been
several months or more since i last posted to you all and said how
well my life style changes to eating a "whole foods" diet and working
on de-stressing has helped my rosacea. while it did improve greatly
i felt like these past couple of months i had hit a plateau. it was
like it wasn't getting worse but i still had red marks on my cheeks
but they weren't bumps, it was like they were scars or something from
the long gone papules and pustules. well, the woman who is in charge
of the health food deptartment at the grocery store i shop at told me
about this product that she said a friend of hers took for acne that
cleared it up completely, so, i bought a bottle and tried it. in
less than a week i saw a marked improvement and it hasn't even been
more than two weeks now and i am really seeing the red marks from
where the papules/pustules were fade A LOT. this stuff is
called "herpanacine" and it is basically big doses of vitamin a and
vitamin e, with selenium, L-lysine, L-trosine, and some herbs. you
can find it online for cheaper than i paid, but even at $22 a bottle
that i paid i am so happy with the changes i have seen that it was
definitely worth it. i am really looking forward to seeing how my
skin looks after using this stuf a while longer. what have you got
to lose, find it cheap, try a bottle, see if it helps. i'd love to
hear back and see if anyone else has the kind of luck with this stuff
that i am having.... happy trails, alex.

Re: att. Suzanne Edgar/How is it possible?

2007-12-27 12:41:19

... how it is possible to eat LOTS of
It's not easy to keep below 30g, especially so for vegetarians. And
if you are vegan it starts to get plain tedious. Creativity is required.
A serious penalty with the 30-day diet is that you will probably not
get enough protein - low carbs and high protein just don't come in the
same vegetarian food, except for tofu. But you will survive the month
even if you are a vegan (and cannot eat eggs or hard cheese).
Also see Lowcarb Vegetarian Protein Sources
http://www.immuneweb.org/lowcarb/food/protein.html for good material
on food balancing).
The firmer the tofu, the more protein and the fewer carbs. Use the
firmest "cotton" tofu if you can find it. It's the type usually
available packed in rectangular tubs and immersed in water, in
refrigerator cases in Chinese stores and produce departments of
regular supermarkets. Ask for GM-free. Firm tofu is dense and solid
and holds well in stir-fry dishes, soups, or on the grill. Soft tofu
is an excellent choice for recipes that call for blended tofu. Silken
tofu is made by a slightly different process that results in a creamy,
custard-like product. Silken tofu works well in pureed or blended
dishes. Different from milk-based products, "light" tofu products
have fewer carbs.
There are now also tofu-based substitutes for yogurts, cheeses,
spreads, milks, creams and icecreams. Count carbs from the label.
NB: tempeh is also made from soya beans but has 17 g carbs per 100g as
compared with 1-5g for tofu. Wait until your 30 days are up, but
perhaps try textured vegetable proteins (TVP) made from soya and quorn
(mushroom protein). Seitan is often called the "meat substitute". It
is made from wheat gluten and like quorn and TVP contains around 8g
carbohydrates per 100g.
Remember the 30g carbs per day limit is only for 30 days so that you
can verify the response of your rosacea to the diet. Then you can
increase carbs. In my view, vegetarians can increase quite a lot
because at least one third of carbs in vegetables is fibre, ie
non-digestible and non-sugar forming. Look here for
Carbohydrates in a Vegetarian Diet
http://www.vegetarian-diet.info/vegetarian-diet-carbohydrates.htm
See the list below with the carb content of vegetables and fruits.
Here's some ways to make a limited food range more interesting
Try different cooking methods for vegetables: stir-fry, braised,
roasted, sauted in brown butter, microwaved with cheese or cream
topping (+/-lemon and chives), raw with dips and dressings, sauted and
blended with cream for soups (hot and cold)
Practice cooking tofu in different ways. Add taste with
frying, aromatic oils, garlic and herb butters
a little seasoning, miso, dressing, herbs, spices (not hot)
soy sauce, salsas (not hot), pestos and other suitable accompaniments
Help fill yourself with liquid, eg saute and cook the veggies in water
and blend to make soup. Chilled soups are good in summer.
If you are cooking for family or guests, look here for recipes with
carbohydrates counted (you can adjust quantity interactively)
http://www.recipezaar.com/browse/index.zsp?pg=1&path=0FC15C11F06B
These meals are low in carbohydrates; add high carb extras, like
sweetcorn and fruits, for the others at the table.
Good eating

RE: [rosacea-diet-users-support-group] att. Suzanne Edgar/How is it possible?

2007-12-27 04:44:44

If you eat lots of salad veggies - like romaine, spinach leaves, arugula
as the main bulk of your meal - there are very few carbs. I add a
little steamed broccoli, beans, asparagus. I drizzle olive oil and
lemon juice on top and then eat a decent amount of protein - like steak
or salmon. This is what I normally have for lunch and for dinner - I
sometimes cook the spinach and add some kale. I always sprinkle some
"Brewers yeast flakes" on top for flavor - best way to get your b
vitamins - one tablespoon has about 3 carb grams. I normally have
organic eggs or left over steak for breakfast and green tea. I snack in
between meals on almond butter and celery or a handful of nuts. I
occasionally eat a few cherries or a fig. This all seems to keep my
skin clear - no problems and I feel great. I make sure I take a
multivitamin, bromelain (reduces inflammation), grape seed extract, and
extra calcium and magnesium. I have recently been adding the herb
"slippery elm" to my diet as it keeps me regular. My skin was red and
pimply before and is now smooth and creamy looking - a miracle!! I stay
totally out of the sun and put Linds Sy's Zinco cream on every day for
protection - it does not irritate my face and actually helps me not to
flare so easily. I avoid too spicy food as it makes me flush a little.
This all involves discipline but the results are great. I no longer
have the sugar cravings as my body has adjusted.
Hope this helps
Suz

Tina,
I remember you and your raspberry smoothies.
I am so glad you have figured out your carbohydrate
tolerance level. As you know, I set the 30 gram limit
for thirty days. After the thirty days, everyone
can do whatever they want. That is the beauty of
the Rosacea Diet, it is only for thirty days and then
you figure it out from there. Having you in the
group with this post epitomizes what you do
AFTER the thirty days. And it seems to have
worked for you even though you must have one
of the most difficult cases of rosacea and other
skin/scalp problems I have heard about. Thanks
so much for the post. I am sure some may relate
to your experience, but it is unusual.
As to Arachidonic Acid, Drs Eades say on
page 352 of their book "A Trick for Reducing
Arachidonic Acid in Steaks and Roasts'
which you know doubt know about.

Re: [rosacea-diet-users-support-group] Vexed in Ventura County, CA

2007-12-25 12:23:59

Mike,
You are now in the running for the best
in Rosacea Diet humor for 2003. Gail
look out, Mike has found his nitch!
Obviously your date can eat whatever
while you just order protein if you can
and leave the carbohydrate on the plate.
If she asks, you can surely come up with
something humorous why you are not
eating the French Fries and leaving the
bun. Sometimes it is possible to order
something that will work. At an Italian
restaurant order Antipasto. Go to a
steakhouse.
As to whether to tell you friends and
family, my philosophy is to let everyone
know. Tell them 14 million Americans
have it. Explain what it is. Tell them
you are on a thirty day diet to see if
this works to control it. If they insist
you eat that apple pie and ice cream
just tell them at the end of the thirty
days you will take them up on it, but
for now you are checking out this diet.
If your friends and family love you
surely they can tolerate a thirty day
diet. AFTER the thirty days, you should
definitely eat whatever all your friends
and family want you to eat. Your rosacea
will return with such gusto that you
should be convinced. Then you will
have to decide what to do. This group
can help. I have told you what books
to buy validating a high protein diet.
With a mind as clever as yours I am
sure you can come up with some great
lines why you are avoiding sugar.
You may be inspirational to the group.
You could write a whole series of
lines of what to say when granny
offers you your favorite dessert or
you mom says, 'You don't love me
cause you won't eat what I specially
baked for you!' But in this case,
granny and mom loves you and you love
them.
By telling a line, she will be
hurt. The best thing is to tell
them why you can't eat it. Tell
her you love her and it is simply
a diet.
Once you are completely convinced
this diet works, you can decide if
avoiding sugar and carbs is worth
the sacrifice for your face. Most
rosaceans don't think it is. They want
their cake and eat it too, finding
other ways to control rosacea. At
the point you decide that it is
worth it, you will have to explain
to those who love you that you still
love them, but you have decided
what it best for you and follow
a new life style diet.
I think your date will be impressed
you are on a diet. Just tell her
you are on the Rosacea Diet. If
she asks questions, you can impress
her with your knowledge of rosacea
and your quick wit. Tell her she can
order whatever she wants. And if
she tempts you with ice cream or
whatever, you can impress her with
your will power. She may admire
a man with will power. If she doesn't,
then maybe you should find another
date, unless you admire someone
who tells you to eat something you
know isn't good for you.
Many rosaceans will not have the
will power to do this diet, and you
may be one of them. That isn't
so bad, since you will be in the
majority and there are other ways
to control it. However, there are
200 in this group that have done it.
They are a good group and can
confirm it is worth it. You may come to
the same conclusion.

An Update

2007-12-24 21:49:46

Hi I havent been posting for a few weeks cause I've been trying to
figure out why I got so much worse on the Rosacea diet. This is what
I've come up with so far.
I cannot go on 30 carbs cause that means having to much meat and 3
weeks on the diet only made things much worse.I flushed ALL the time
and the redness never went away. I cannot tolerate cheese. I cannot
tolerate eggyolk and red meat very well so I must be VERY sensitive
to Arachidonic aAcid. I read the book Protein Power and felt that I
got all the additional information to really understand the benefits
of a high protein diet. Eating a lot of rice never made me flush but
I want to loose weight and I figured out I'm very sensitive to sugar
and probably insuline resistant .Since I have FMS and Chronic
Fattigue and had problems with gaining weight easily all the talk
about Arachidonic Acid and sugar really made me realize just how
terrible my eatinghabits had been. I practically lived on red meat
and startch and sugar so no wonder I was feeling very bad. Now the
second time around on the Rosacea Diet I cut out red meat, eggs and
cheese and anything else suspicious but it didnt help I still felt
very bad and flushed all the time nor did I loose any weight at all
so after 3 weeks I gave up and started back on a low fat 1000
calorie diet with more carbs. I have a peach and a green apple and
more soyyougurt and my raspberry smothie plus more broccoli and
stuff so I'm around 60-100 carbs a day. This enables me to eat less
protein so now I am around the 26 grams of protein 3 times a day
that I'm supposed to have(accoding to the tables in the protein
powerbook). I eat a chicken breast in the morning and filé of pork
or fish for luch and dinner since those are the only good protein
things I can eat. I dont know if it is the protein itself or
something else in the meat and fish that my body can't tolerate too
much of ,but I'm so much better and my face is so much better after
increasing the carbs to 60-100 thus allowing me to eat less calories
and less protein than on 30 carbs. Dont get me wrong I'm still on
what other people would call a high proteindiet since I eat about
100-140 g of meat or fish 3 times a day and I DO NOT eat any sugar
or flour(except for 1 slice wasa fiber hard bred)and NO
potatoes, rice pasta or corn or beans.Cutting away all sugar and
eating protein 3 times a day has given me a lot of energy and I now
loose weight steadily and my face is much better. The only fat I eat
is virgin oliveoil. I'm writing this incase there is anybody else
out there who didn't get any better on the Rosacea with the 30 carb
a day diet. I want to say READ the protein power book and try
finding out if you are sensitive to arachidonic acid. Then try to
increase carbs slightly and maybe if you are like me it will work
better.I am CONVINCED a high protein low carb diet together with
avoiding all sugar, starch and flower is the key to a better face and
a better health and I never want to go back to sugar again!
I'm very grateful to Brady who is the reason I started investigating
all of this in the first place. So if anybody else out there has my
kind of strange body and just can't tolerate a 30 carb diet I highly
recommend to read the protein power book and then trying a 60 carb a
day diet without arachidonic acid rather than giving up the high
protein approach thinking it didn't work. I think the only thing I'm
sure of after hanging around the group reading posts is that
EVERYBODY is very different and reacts differently to all foods and
topicals. I've been reading about a few people who seem to do really
well on a high carb raw vedgetable diet for example but that is not
for me at all .So I guess my proetin curve is humpshaped with an
optimum around the 26-30 g of protein 3 times a day. Less than that
and I have no energy whatsoever and more than that I start to flush!
I have A negative blood and should according to the blood diets be a
vegetarian but that's not for me at all since I need and love meat
but maybe it has something to do with why I cant have really huge
amounts of meat.
I have enourmous problems with super sensitive skin that burns a lot
of the time and my scalp is very sensitive and burns like fire and I
I can't tolerate most shampoos.Never heard of anybody having
scalpproblems on this board but my derm told me that you can have
Rosacea in the scalp too and mine is red and burning very often.
My eyes are pretty bad but I use the eyescrub and thera tears and
that helps.Only problem is I have to sleep with a fan and that helps
my face but damages my eyes.
I could not tolerate metrogel on my face it made the burning and
redness 100 times worse.I have no postules now on this diet but the
burning and redness is there .The redness is related to heat and
emotions.I can't laugh or cry or be nervous. Since I'm allergic to
antibiotics my only hope is the photoderm which I will do as soon as
I can afford it. My face only looks sunburned yet but the pain is
unbearable sometimes and not being able to use ANYTHING on my face
except for vaseline and Linda Sy's Tinted Zinco drives me nuts. I
haven't found anything to wash my face with and believe me I have
tried many things. I have a coconut soap that is the least bad of
all bad and I can take trace amounts of that but it still makes me
flush so I cant clean my face properly and I cant moisturise it.So I
really need those lasertreatments. The diet however helps me control
it so far and has made my health a lot better so I am VERY grateful
to Brady and everybody else who explain why a high protein low carb
diet can change your life for the better. If I hadn't gotten the
Rocasea diagnosis I wouldn't have found out about a Bradys diet and
I wouldn't have read the Protein Power book so I wouldn't have been
30 pounds lighter now on my way to loose 30 more pounds with more
energy and better health than in 7 years ,so I guess sometimes a lot
of good really does come along with the bad!
Sincerely Tina.

Okay, I have not read any postings regarding dating, but this is quite an
interesting and somewhat humorous quandary I am in (as I am sure many of
you are in)....I am single....Hence, it becomes very difficult (to say the
least) to
actually get out there and take a date out to eat, and keep my servings to low
carbs and no sugar.
Honey, what do you want for dinner?...."I'll have the eggs and bacon, no toast,
and no ketchup...Oh and can you make sure the bacon is not cured with
sugar. Thanks!"....
I am trying to make this experience as fun as possible because the reality of
rosacea is just that: a reality...I am sure I do not have to iterate all the
ways our
habits have been altered to maintain our rosacea diet and lifestyle (even
though I continue to fall off the wagon and start over).....It is the single
most
difficult reality I have had to face (no pun intended...:)...), but since I'm
only 26,
I'm sure that's not saying much.
Am I the only one with this problem???....
Tonight's topic: rosacea and single...Story at eleven...
Forgive my chipper mood.....I just find this somewhat vexing and downright
humorous...I want to at least date sometimes, but I don't know what to do with
regards to what to eat, etc....
I am sure for those who are married, you have told your whole family, or at
least your spouses and they understand...but I've only told my brother, and
have told him to keep it a secret...It's not that it's embarrassing, but...it's
kind of
embarrassing....:)......At least quietly going the diet and quietly dealing with
rosacea with only our group, my dermatologist, and my brother knowing about
my 'condition' is easier socially....Do folks tell everyone, including family
and
their dates?.....
Brady, I know this isn't like a therapy and social forum for folks with rosacea,
but I hope what I am bringing up is somewhat relevant and is something that
at least one person has been pondering/dealt with besides me...
Any help would be appreciated....THANKS!
P.S. What cleansers do you all use?....I have been using Cetaphil, but a
fellow rosacean said Cetaphil is bad longer-term....He uses Dove for sensitive
skin, but isn't that not good either because it's 'soapy' and 'sudsy'?.....So
what's
the better alternative?.....Thanks again!

Acne / Rosacea Sufferers New Breakthrough Treatments

2007-12-23 20:16:48

From
http://www.chipsnetwork.com/newsstory.asp?article=783&sid=591117
Acne / Rosacea Sufferers New Breakthrough Treatments
Over 98% of adults have the Human Demodex Parasite that has been shown to play a
role in Rosacea, Acne, and Enlarged Pores.
14 Million Americans Have Rosacea And Most of Them Don't Know It
Rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) is a common but little-known disorder of the
facial skin that affects an estimated 14 million Americans -- and most of them
don't know it. In fact, while rosacea is becoming increasingly widespread as the
populous baby boom generation enters the
most susceptible ages, a Gallup survey found that 78 percent of Americans have
no knowledge of this disease, including how to recognize it and what to do about
it.
Because of its red-faced, acne-like effects on personal appearance, however, it
can cause significant psychological, social and occupational problems if left
untreated. In recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society, nearly 70 percent
of rosacea patients said this condition had lowered their self-confidence and
self-esteem, and 41 percent reported it had caused them to avoid public contact
or cancel social engagements. Among rosacea patients with severe symptoms,
nearly 70 percent said the disorder had adversely affected their professional
interactions, and nearly 30 percent said they had even missed work because of
their condition.
While all the causes of rosacea are unknown and there is no cure, today medical
help is available that can control the signs and symptoms of this potentially
life-disruptive disorder. Any one of the following warning signs is a signal to
see a dermatologist or other knowledgeable physician for diagnosis and
appropriate treatment before the signs and symptoms become increasingly severe:
o Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.
o Small visible blood vessels on the face.
o Bumps or pimples on the face.
o Watery or irritated eyes.
Some treatments are based on research that clearly links and increased presence
of the Human Demodex Parasite with the disorders. These treatments may involve
the use of antibiotics or seabuckthorn oil (Hippophae rhamnoides) which targets
the mite to reduce the inflammation under the skin and therefore provide relief
of the mechanisms that cause the rosacea complex of symptoms.

Rosacea Cure

2007-12-23 18:27:39

Hello,
I am new to the group, and thought I should mention this. Before I
came across the Rosacea diet I had been going through all sorts of
websites. I stumbled across one and would just like to hear from the
group if any of you know about it.
The site it www.martial-arts-network.com/drron/rosacea.html and the
site states the following:
"ROSACEA - I HAVE THE CURE
Ron Tramontano
P.O. Box 971541
Palmetto Park Rd.
Boca Raton, FL 33497-1541
Rosacea:
A cure for this annoying skin problem has been found by me. If you
have this, you know how annoying it can be. You may even want to hide
your head in a paper bag.
Rosacea, The Cure is in your kitchen.
Send $10 and a self-addressed stamped envelope or your E-Mail address
to P.O. Box 971541, Palmetto Park Rd., Boca Raton, FL 33497-1541
I am not a doctor, I found this purely out of desperation. I went to
a doctor and was told that I had Rosacea and that there was no cure
for this condition. He gave me Metrocream 0.75% which was totally
useless. All I had at the time was reddening around both sides of
the nose for about 6 months. After using this off the shelf product
it was gone in a month. Will it come back? I don't know, it has been
five years now so far so good. 05/05/2003"
I have not sent my 10$ as I live in South Africa and US dollars are
rarer than hens teeth. So, if any of you know anything about this,
please let me know, is it worth a try?
Thanks
Carrin

Birth control pill

2007-12-22 09:30:01

Some ingredients in my pill are 'lactose' and 'saccharose'. Could
these be effecting rosacea negatively? I'm sure the dosis is very
small. Are there any women who have found the birth control pill to
be
of negative influence? (BTW, I'm taking microgynon 30.)

RE: [rosacea-diet-users-support-group] FWD: Welcome

2007-12-22 06:08:56

Welcome Jyoti,
I also found the diet quite an adjustment at the beginning. I have been
100% compliant now for about 2 months - I sort of half started a while
ago, but am now very strict with it. It has become quite a natural way
of eating to me now - so don't worry you will adjust. My body has
become very used to not having sugar. My skin is totally clear now
after months of awful redness, pimples and discomfort. It actually only
took 2 weeks for my skin to clear. I have had several people comment on
how beautiful my skin is and they asked me what products I use!! I told
them that I do it all through diet - which to be honest is true. They
cannot believe that I actually have a skin condition! I do avoid harsh
skin products as I know my rosacea skin is very sensitive - but the glow
really comes from the diet! The key is to keep the carbs to less than
30 grams a day - and then after 30 days, see how much your skin can
tolerate. My skin really doesn't like any more than 30. I eat lots of
fresh veggies and just a little fruit and lots of fish, eggs and meat.
I have far more energy than I had before and sleep very well now - so
there are all sorts of benefits to this diet.
So - welcome and just know that you are on your way to super clear skin
again!
Suz.

Alice,
I heard great things about Dr. Weiss also, and since I visit B-more

first name, but I was told he is a Hopkins doc. So if you do a
search, you should find him. My understanding is he trains a lot of
other doctors in how to use IPL to treat rosacea, among other
things. Please let us know how it goes.

Jyoti,
Welcome to the group. We all know the
Rosacea Diet is hard to follow, but in time
it is worth it. Most of us have adjusted
to this way of eating and enjoy it now. It
beats having rosacea. Don't give up since
the results are worth it.

Great Rosacea Site

2007-12-21 06:09:45

Good Day All,
Many of long term sufferers may know this Doctor, Dr. Nase. He, like
us is a long term Rosacea sufferer. He has been active in the
research and treatment of rosacea for years and has personally
experienced many of the "treatments" that we have had to endure to
reach stability in the flushing as well as some of the other physical
side effects of this condition.
Dr. Nase has been working hard on updating his site to contain in-
depth articles, new studies and helpful links at www.drnase.com.
Dr. Nase does sell a book called "Beating Rosacea" which I have
bought and gave to my Derm. because I feel that many do not
understand really what Rosacea is and that it is more than a topical
skin, adult acney problem. I found Dr. Nase's book easy to
understand (did not need a medical translator). The book helped me to
better understand my condition, triggers and treatment.
To my suprise I actually got a thank you note from a patient at the
derm office. My derm. is now doing more than perscribing creams and
handing patients just a simple pamplet.
But, book aside, the website has indepth articles and information on
symptoms, treatments, medications and studies which is helpful.
This way the next time you go to the Derm. or have a flare up you
will be educated, and incharge of your rosacea not the other way
around.
Visit his site at:

Re: Photoderm/IPL

2007-12-20 21:17:34

For Kris (and any other interested party)--
Thanks so much for the details you have provided. Glad to hear you survived
the procedure without anesthetic. I assume you mean topical anesthetic, and I
say that because I actually had the procedure done five times last year with
mounds of topical anesthetic slathered on my face. The office I went to
referred to my treatment as an IPL Photofacial, but I'm guessing you're correct
with
your Kleenex analogy. Maybe IPL would be the equivalent of the Puffs brand
of tissue. :)
The reason I asked the question about sensitive skin is that my rosacea was
much milder when I first sought treatment a year ago. I was able to freely use
many products on my skin. With lots of topical anesthetic, the procedures
caused less than mild discomfort. They stopped my flushing completely and sent
my papules back under the surface of my skin.
However, last March I for the first time experienced the burning/stinging
sensation that many Rosaceans describe. Dr. Nase writes that this is a sign
that
rosacea is progressing, and my inclination was to seek
IPL/Photoderm/Photofacial immediately. However, I had just finished a round of
very low dose
accutane in January 2003, so I was not eligible for IPL again until the end of
June.
(Hopefully the last sentence will serve as a warning for accutane users. I
felt my very low doses of accutane created miraculous help for my eyes, but
when my skin became worse, I could not get treatment for at least six months
because of the accutane. I wouldn't repeat that decision, no matter how much
the
accutane seemed to help the eyes, because my skin has now had ample time to
worsen.)
I had planned to travel to use a highly recommended expert for my latest
round of treatments, but family complications (severe illness of my 81-year-old
mother) have made it so difficult to leave town that I've nervously made
arrangements to get at least one treatment here in D.C. with hopes of going to a
more
experienced specialist at a later time.
So now, today, I'm going for an IPL treatment with skin that burns/stings
24/7, and I seriously doubt I will be able to tolerate the topical anesthetic
because I can use virtually nothing besides purified water on my skin.
Additionally, a different nurse will be administering the treatments (the nurse
who did
mine last year has left the practice), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that
the new nurse has enough experience to know how to fine tune the machine in
the way that Dr. Nase insists is important.
At any rate, I've been biting my fingernails over this, and I truly
appreciate your encouraging words.
Sincerely,
Alice Haddow

I second the lasar "surgery." 3 sessions and the rosacea is totally
gone...still watching the sugar but easily eating 100 grams of carbs per day
with no signs. If you are in the midwest, I can recommend an excellent
doctor...Dr. Kovak in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Re: [rosaceans] rosyfacegal

2007-12-19 21:52:33

Yes, I did thanks!
I guess I should post a quick intro now. ;o)
I was just recently diagnosed with rosacea after
suffering with it for about 18 months. I suspect
there were earlier signs that I didn't really notice,
and even my first flare-up I thought was just an
allergic reaction to a new facial product. After it
happened a few more times (and I *hadn't* used any new
facial products) I figured it must be something else
and started scouring the web for possibilities.
I saw my derm only two weeks ago and he diagnosed me
and put me on what seems to be the standard treatment
of oral antibiotics and a topical cream.
Unfortunately, I'm having problems with the treatment.
:o( The tetracycline gave me a run-on headache, and
the cream has dried my skin to the point where it just
*drinks* moisturizer. I've been told to discontinue
the treatment and have an appointment with the derm
again next week.
So that's where I stand at the moment. I'm glad to
have found this group--hopefully I can get some good
info and support here.

Deb--
I remember your remarkable posts on photoderm from some time back. One thing
I don't remember: did you have sensitive skin when you had the photoderm
treatments? If so, did the photoderm help this aspect of your rosacea?
I'm headed for photoderm tomorrow, and my skin is extremely sensitive at this
point. From a pain perspective, I'm wondering if I'll be able to handle the
topical anesthetic, let alone the treatment itself.
Any info you can provide would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

reversed the damage and gave me this second chance.

anything that wasn't on her prescription note pad for rosacea.

2007-12-17 07:08:52

Giovanna,
I wondered what happened to
you. Glad to hear your good
report.
Stress has always been a big
factor in my rosacea. I notice
it always shows up in my face
sort of like a stress meter and
the gauge is always RED. Glad
the Rosacea Diet has made a
difference in your life. And
we are glad you are in the
group too! All of our common
experiences validate our
feelings on diet, stress and
other factors. And you won't
get this in other rosacea
support groups since they
rarely discuss diet and want
to have their cake and eat it
too. You are one brave cookie
to eat that cake and pasta.
However, to validate your
findings, when on vacation I
seem to be able to tolerate
carbohydrates as well. I
attribute it to no stress. Stress
is probably just as big a factor
in rosacea as sugar or at the
very least close to it. We really
don't need either one, but we
can do something to avoid sugar.
We can only try to avoid stress.
Vacations were invented to
reduce stress, but sometimes
even vacations cause stress.

Re: Much Improved Skin !

2007-12-16 07:11:15

Hello everyone,
I have been a little out of touch lately. But I wanted to report that
I am doing okay as far as my rosacea goes. I have had a kind of
surprising turn of events. I thought it might help others to report
this. First of all, I have been on the rosacea diet since April 03,
and have seen very good improvement since then. Well, recently, a
very stressful, and not so healthy relationship I was in broke up. I
have been away from that stressful person for several weeks now and
guess what? My skin has been doing so much better. I have even been
able to eat an occasional piece of cake or a small amount of pasta,
and no flushing! I still have some red papules on my cheeks which are
persistent, but they're not too bad. The thing that seems so
surprising is that I don't feel the inflammation like I used to. My
face doesn't heat up like it used to. Can it be that the toxic stress
of that relationship had such a dramatic effect on me? My body was
reacting wildly just 6 months ago. Now I am still trying to eat
mainly low carb vegetables and protein. I want to still be careful,
because from this diet I lost some weight and I feel better. So I
will continue to respect that. But wow! I cannot say enough about how
much the stress in our lives can affect us adversely. In my case at
least this seems to be true. The toxic environment I was in made my
body go wacko, and now, combined with the rosacea diet, it's getting
back to balance. The lesson is, stress and negative emotions can
really get you! I see I have a propensity to react skin-wise, when
I'm under pressurized conditions. Therefore, I have to learn to
safeguard my health, so I don't trigger these inflammatory responses.
Thanks to all of you for all the good sense and support I get from
this list....Giovanna

Attn: Clonidine users who exercise regularly

2007-12-16 01:24:54

I'm hoping to get some advice from those who exercise regularly and
take Clonidine for flushing. I have an appt. next Monday and I plan
on requesting to be put on Clonidine. I am into moderate to heavy
weight lifting 3-4 times a week and also try to put in 50-75 miles a
week on my bike. I do my best to stay above 18mph when I ride,
usually for an hour at a time. I love both of these activities but
hate the intense flushing that results---great for the body and soul,
but terrible for the face. I vaguely remember reading a post about
rebound flushing during exercise while taking Clonidine but was
unable to find it when I searched for "clonidine and exercise". Any
input from those who exercise regularly and are taking Clonidine
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

I thought I'd pass on some info. about the My Herbal Practice. I noticed some
questions about where to get cilantro seeds and was wondering the same thing
myself. I have since found out that cilantro seeds and coriander seeds are the
same thing. I did a little extra research to double check and make sure.
Often, at least in the US and Canada, the leaves are called cilantro and the
seeds are called coriander. They have very different tastes and I wonder if the
different names were given to keep from mixing them up? I don't know why there
are two names, but cilantro seeds and coriander seeds are exactly the same
thing. I hope this helps find cilantro seeds.

gelatin capsules. If you can't find them, they have a website
naturesway.com. It says on the label that it is also known as
Lapacho or Taheebo. Another supposedly good herb for anti-
inlammatory use is Neem. Pau d'Arco is from the rainforest .

vitamins what do you do?(Sage)

2007-12-14 12:34:51

My skin does not feel over handled at all! It feels wonderful! Before
using Sage, my skin also felt better just leaving it alone, but it didn't
look healthy at all. It was dry, flakey, irritated and stinged all the
time. Sage has given my skin moisture without irritation, and has made my
face soft and suptle, like it was before getting rosacea.

Re: [rosaceans] Digest Number 385

Concerning anti-inflammatories: I also have good luck
with putting a paste (like a mask) of Pau D'arco. I buy
the herb capsules at the health food store, open a
capsule in my palm, add a few drops of water and
spread it on my face. It looks like a dark green mask.
I've only been trying it a couple months, but it seems to
be holding back the postules very well, even during that
infamous time-of-month when my face usually goes
beserk. I tried it because it is proported to be
anti-inflammatory and I figured it didn't cost nearly as
much as a visit to the Derm and a prescription. It also
has anti-fungal properties, supposedly. I use it in the
morning when I am preparing breakfast before anyone
else is up. I don't use it every day, but about every other
day. I leave it on for about 20 minutes. Right now it
doesn't look like I have rosacea, so I will stick with this
routine.

Re: vitamins what do you do? (Zyflamend)

I got mine from Immunesupport.com, but you can also get it from many
health food stores (call first to make sure they have it), or
drugstore.com. I'm sure there are a few other places to get it as
well. It is not commerical available, so you prob have to stick to
those places that deal with homeopathic/all natural care.

I dont use Sage, but you can go to Makeupalley.com and check out
Productsville (product reviews by real people) and see what they say
about the Sage products. Just a little added info to check out
before you try - I find it useful sometimes.

Re: vitamins what do you do?

I take:
Multi-Vitamin (Twinlabs high potency)
EPO
Acidophilus
Zyflamend
I just started taking Zyflamend this week and noticed immeditate
results in some minor redness around my nose area (usu from
exercising and/or stress). I was going to wait about a month before
I posted to the group - just to make sure. So the jury is still out.
I think that I would not have seen results so quickly if I weren't
on the diet.
Its an all-natural anti-inflammatory and is often used instead of
glucosamine for various types of inflammation, mostly joint pain.
It works by inhibiting an enzyme that the makers think is the key
cause of most types of inflammation. I noticed that much of of
supplements that Dr. Nase recommends fall into the inflammatory
category, so I started researching on ONE or TWO supplement instead
of a half-dozen that would do the job.
Zyflamend has the following:
Holy Basil
Tumeric
Ginger
Green Tea
Rosemary
Hu Zhang
Chinese Goldthread and Barberry
Oregano
Scutellaria

Dr. Nase

Does anyone have a phone number or street address for Dr. Nase? I
tried to get in touch with him by e-mail a week ago, but no response.
I wanted to either talk to him directly or have my Dr. speak to him.
Thanks for your help.

vitamins what do you do?

2007-12-12 12:10:38

I know what vitamins Brady is taking based on his book. Just curious
what everyone else is taking.
I am taking a Multi, B Multi, B 12, MSM, Grapeseed Extract, Ester C,
Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Borage Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Evenin Primrose Oil,
Pycnogenol, Beta Carotene, Baby Aspirin
I am increasing my doses on the Ester C to 2000 and the Grapeseed
Extract and Pycogenol to 100 from 50 per Dr Nases book.
I think I feel better on the vitamins and feel I need something since
the low carb diet lacks some vitamins but I really miss fruit juice
thus the vitamin C.
Can you take too much of the above and have issues?

Well,
I went to my doctors today and she said that protopic is specifically prescrived
for Excema only ans she showed mr her PDR abd also wnet online with me to do
some research..so she didnt prescribe it..she also said I was in the advanced
stages of Rosacea and put me on
Doxycycline and noritate..until I see a Dermotologist who will then suggest
Laser treatment for the red veins in my face that have burst.
I have to wonder if the people on Prottopic are from the U.S and that is why my
doc won't prescribe it.

RE: [rosacea-diet-users-support-group] great skin

2007-12-11 17:55:55

Congratulations! Isn't amazing how well this diet works. I am thrilled
for you. It is a big adjustment but with so many benefits. I just
wanted to let the group know that I have been using a sweetner that has
had no bad affects on my skin at all. It is vegetable glycerine - it
has almost zero carbs in it and so can be added liberally to food. I put
it in my tea and coffee and my skin does not react at all. You can find
it in health food stores and on line. It is a wonderful replacer for
that sweet flavor I crave. It is totally natural and so has no
deleterious affect on the body. Anyone first starting out on this diet
of 30 days should probably avoid it and then after their skin has
cleared, give it a go. It is a great discovery. There is also one
particular protein bar I have been eating that uses glycerine as the
sweetner - it only has 2 grams of carbs in it and is very filling. It is
by "Biochem" and is called "very lo carbohydrate" bar. I love the
chocolate brownie flavour - again I would introduce this after you have
completed the 30 day trial.

Dear Brady
I just wanted to let you no that I have been on your diet now
for two weeks and my skin looks great. It hasn't looked this good in
over two years and it's not burning. The frist week of the diet I did
fell sick because I'm not much of a meat eater but the second week I
started felling better and my skin started to look better. I'm
welling not to ever eat sugar again if it means better looking skin.
I just want to thank you. My Derm. never once said anything about my
diet only gave me cream after cream that made things worse, and put
me on Tetracycline for over a year, witch I no longer take.
Thanks again

Me too,
I have tried, metrojel, and noritiate and then my rosacea just "went away" or
went dormant for about a year and a half, now its just red all the time and
burning. So I am hoping she ( my regular doc) will prescribe it. I wonder why
she didnt try Protopic first?... My Mother has an advance case or Rosacea, with
the pustules..and I do not want it to get that far...
My eyes are really dry and gritty too..which probably means I will have to go to
the eye doctor too.
bummer..
Thanks for the info

Hi Bonjet,
Protopic is actually very good coz it delivers the effects of topical steroids
MINUS the harmful effects--its like hitting 2 birds with 1 stone. =)
From what I know regarding the active ingredient of Protopic which is
TACROLIMUS--Tacrolimus is also used by those who had liver & kidney transplants
to minimize the risk of organ rejection by the body.
Bonjet <bonjet@...
mary
is it good or bad. am not a med person.

also an immunosuppresant, keeps inflammation and rashes down but it doesn't
have the harmful effects of topical steroids like atrophy & adrenal
dependence.

Re: Sunscreens.
I personally do not spend a lot of time sitting out on a beach when the
weather is really hot. This is primarily because my face flushes from
the heat. I would prefer to put fake tan on my face for color! I wear
Linda Sy's sunscreen for very sensitive skin every day. It is wonderful
for rosacea skin as it helps the face not flush. It also has a slight
bronze tint to it, so it gives the skin some color. I wear it instead
of foundation. You can buy it from her website. It is the only cream
that my face doesn't react to. Suz

Just a two cents worth here. I am under the impression that doctors working
under military "rules", (i.e. UCMJ ?), cannot be sued in any court, for
"damages". Even criminal charges may go nowhere, because, as much as I hate to
say
it, the military can be very "political" and "good ol' boy", in its
"orientation".
Civilian doctors, on the other hand, have no "superior officer" telling them
what they can and cannot do, and CAN be sued in a civil court, for damages.
It's like two entirely different worlds, and may explain the differences you
have run into.
God Bless,

This is probably the worst thing in the world to do, but when I'm having

Dear fellow group members,
I am wondering if anyone has had the experience of having their
facial flushing and/or burning turn into actual facial pain? In the
past week I have had the experience that instead of burning, my face
starts to ache as if I have a migraine on my cheek where I normally
get the rosacea symptoms. The pain sometimes lasts for a couple of
hours.
My doctor says he has never had a patient with this kind of pain
before. Also wanted to know what things seemed to help get rid of
this besides diet.
I don't understand what is happening to me...? Help!

Fwd: Lots of questions...

2007-12-06 09:44:05

Katrine,
Welcome to the group and I think your
English is excellent. As for your questions,
first, yes, the diet involves avoiding sugar
for thirty days and I don't know if rosacea
is related somehow to candida. No one
knows what the cause of rosacea is. See
this url
http://www.rosacea-diet.com/html/cause.html
Second, I recommend building up your system
with vitamin and mineral supplements and
my suggestions are in the book.
Third, yes, on occasion I have been able to
tolerate more carbohydrates than my usual
high protein diet, for example, when on a
vacation. My theory is that when on vacation
my stress level is reduced so much that
I can tolerate more carbs. Stress is probably
more of a factor in rosacea than anyone
realizes, and stress has been listed as
a trigger factor by most rosaceans.
But for me, I must stay on my high protein
diet to control rosacea.
Fourth, the controversy over eating a high
protein diet rather than a high carbohydrate
diet will continue no doubt for some time.
I solve this controversy by stating that this
diet is only for thirty days. There are no
known health risks of eating a high protein
diet for thirty days.
However, there is a growing number of
medical doctors who advocate eating a
high protein diet and are still practicing
medicine without losing their licenses. I
have noted these courageous doctors in
my book and suggest reading their books
which can help you understand that eating
a high protein diet is healthy. The usual
worry about eating a high protein diet
centers on the supposed risks involved
with some who may have problems
digesting protein. An example is someone
who has gout. However, most people
have no problem digesting protein and
to worry about whether one may have
some health problem digesting protein
as a reason to avoid a high protein diet
is begging the question. The issue is
whether a high protein diet poses health
risks, not whether someone may have
a problem digesting protein. So far
there are no known proven health risks from
eating a high protein diet. For example,
think about the Eskimo. What kind of
diet did they eat before soft drinks and
candy? Think of the Danish people before
the seventeenth century? How did the
Danish and Eskimo survive by eating a
high protein and fat diet? It wasn't until
the advent of the sugar age that mankind
began eating a high carbohydrate diet.
The real issue isn't a high protein diet.
What really should be a concern for everyone
is what are the health risks of eating a high
carbohydrate diet with generous amounts
of sugar in it? History has shown that
it wasn't until the beginning of the
seventeenth century that mankind ever
eat sucrose in crystal form, increasing
the amounts till it permeates the processed
food industry. Since then, diabetes,
heart disease, stroke, cancer, rosacea,
and a host of other diseases have
increased.
Rosaceans should give considerable
thought to what is in their diet that
triggers rosacea. That is what the Rosacea
Diet is all about. And the facts are that
this diet does indeed control rosacea.
The only way to prove this is to try
it for thirty days. I hope you do.

Re: green tea

"(if it is decaffeinated it will lose its goodness in process)."
I actually spoke with a tea vendor from Upton Tea company in Mass
about this a while back bec I was concerned about losing the
benefits of the tea. They stated that as long as it is not
chemically processed, it still retains its health benefits (they use
CO2). The only drawback is that this method still leaves some
caffeine compared to most decafs. BTW, I'm caffeine sensitive and
I've had tried a lot of decaf green tea out there, and Upton has the
best.

LaTortilla Factory makes a low carb/low fat tortilla. Its sold at
most groceries stores - I can even find it at Safeway. I usu fill
this with a little cheese, tomatoes, eggs, (whatever is allowed,
ha!). This and unsweetened soy milk are pretty good. Also, cottage
cheese w/ little dark green lettuce and splash of lemon, eggs, a
little meat protein works for me.
Basically, I've tried making eggs, veggies, and protein in different
ways to work for breakfast. Lately I've noticed a couple of high
fiber cereals on the market. Like Fiber One and 1-2 others from
Kashi (the carb count is moderate, but the fiber
