Hello
What is fotoderm and does anyone have an approximate cost?
I just sent away for the tea tree/emu oil and am going to try it as
well. I have been so discouraged with my red face & pustules
especially the week before & week of my period. Has anyone else seen
a correlation with their hormonal cycle and flare ups? I just got
some samples of Linda Sy's products. I especially like her tinted
Zinc O Cream (sunscreen) its very soothing on the inflamation. Anyone
else had any experiences with her products? I've started reading Dr.
Nace's book & finally feel some hopefulness about this awful
condition. Nancy
Hi group
It's been two and a half weeks and the bumps on my face are really
going away! My husband been on the plan and he can't believe the
results he is experienceing. He has to eat a few more carbs then 30
though. I was looking in the mirror and I almost started to cry - my
face I could see it for the first time in a long time - still red -
but I could see my skin - it was like it was hidden under the rosacea!
Plus my hair has been so soft and different. I keep petting it
wonding why it seems so nice (havn't changed shampos) Last night my
husband goes "feel your elbows" I felt them and couldn't believe how
soft they were. For years I've had rough and tough elbows that no
lotion ever made soft! All the health benifits this way of eating
and all the extra benefits is truly awesome! I voted in the poll and
I havn't even finished the 30 days - can't wait for the six month
poll!
Happy Happy Happy in Denver
Jana :-)
I'm a newly diagnosed rosacean however have know I've had it
for a couple of years. I need info on foods that bother people, and
if anyone found they had food allergies or stomach problems. I
also would like info on IPL. Also, has anyone had any luck with
accutane or did it make the rosacea flares worse. What about
facials and microderm abrasion? Any info would be great!
Ashley
I put on the Metrogel first.
15 minutes later I rub on the emu/tea tree oil.
I do the same in the evening.
Marilyn
This is true - talk to the doctor and get samples - they always have
them. In the past I tried Metrogel and my skin couldn't tolerate
it. However, now I'm on Metrocream and I'm fine with it. It turns
out that the gel is very drying. Since my skin is very sensitive (I
haven't been able to wash or use any topical anything on my face for
years - doesn't matter if it says for ultra-sensitive skin or the
doctor PROMISES that it will be okay, etc.), I found that Metrogel
just made things worse.
The other thing that I recommend is not to go too crazy trying
things that are "touted" to heal, cure, etc. rosacea or other skin
problems. The real way to judge treatments is if they have gone
through clinical trials. I suggest Dr. Nase's book which offers a
good literature review of the trials, etc. on rosacea treatments.
Sheila
Hi everyone,
I think I forgot to mention that my sensitivity to
heat has become less since the fotoderm sessions.
Summer is my least favorite time of year in general
and when it gets to about 85 I run from AC to AC. But
this year I am finding I am much more heat tolerant -
not only in my facial skin but my whole body. My
theory is that my body sort of sympathized with the
pressure and heat I felt in my face. It is a great
relief. Deb
Hi,
Could the person that put on the list that they were using tea tree/emu oil
in conjunction with metrogel please contact me. It would be very much
appreciated. I ordered the tea tree/emu and have the metrogel on hand.
I would like to know which you were and how you are using them.
which first, how many times a day, are you only applying to the effected
areas or your entire face.
please, any information you can tell me would be very helpfull.
thank you once again.

Jana,
Congratulations on sticking to the diet and your improvement.
Vacation and reducing your stresses no doubt helped as well!
Glad to hear that your husband may join you in this. Keep us
informed when the thirty days are up. Yes there has been a flurry of
comments lately in this group. I will be in Denver next month to attend
a family reunion

According to info in Dr. Nase's book, chalazions often are related to ocular
rosacea. Dr. Nase outlines several different options for treating ocular
rosacea. For those with severe symptoms, including chalazions, low-dose
accutane is sometimes recommended. He doesn't suggest beginning treatment
with the accutance, however. Rather, he suggests starting with the eye
washes, thera tears, doxycycline, and nutritional therapy such as borage oil,
grapeseed extract, and esther c. If that doesn't work, move on to more
advanced therapies, such as low-dose accutane.
Hi Rosaceans!
I've been on vacation and so much great info has been posted here.
First let me tell you, going on vacation I had no fear of slipping on
this diet, because it's working wonders on my face!!!!!!!!!!!!
I brought my food and drank a ton of water. It will be two weeks on
Wednesday and I am so happy! My husband can hardly believe the change
in my personality. And he too can see the bumps all over my face
disappearing! On the other hand the redness I have is severe. I look
like a really bad sunburn. I expect that will get better over the
long haul, but to have the bumps going away so quickly - how happy
can I be! Today my husband decided he is going to change the way he
eats also. He is so shocked at how they put sugar into everything.
He has bad acne on his back, horrible large painful bumps. I didn't
even try to get him on the diet - he has seen such an improvement in
me overall that he just wants to do it. He is having a hard time on
his first day, just like I did. Brady I can't thank you enough for
doing what you do here. To be honest, the last thing I ever wanted
was to join a "rocacea-diet group" that sounds like so much fun!
Jana in Denver :-)
I ordered the teatree/emu oil products. I will let you know how things are
going. I want to wean off of the oral antibiotic and Noritate cream if it will
work. It is much less expensive and moreover has no side effects! For those
interested in my experiment go to the following websites to find out what I am
using. I ordered both the healing salve and the ultimate acne lotion.
http://www.uniquelycyber.com/well/ettohs.html and
http://www.uniquelycyber.com/well/ual.html.
Sue's husband is also taking part in the experiment. Sue, if you're out there
let us know your hubby's results also!
Susan
I have had styes from time to time and I find that putting a small amount of
Mentholatum (sp?) on the stye several times a day is very effective in
treating the stye. You must be careful not to get the ointment in your eye
(while it won't damage the eye, it will burn/sting and make your eye water)
and even though you don't get any in your eye, it will still make your eye
water for a few minutes. I find that the small discomfort of watering eye
for a few minutes far outweighs the prolonged discomfort of a stye that
really gets going. They can last a week or so, and your eyelid swells up
and then the stye comes to a head and oozes. They are really disgusting.
Stopping them early is the best plan.
Lynne
Im sorry Tricia.
Who are you asking?
Me or Susan?
I have been using it for a year.
Great results.

Does anybody know if chalazions are related to rosacea?
I have one on my eye and am wondering how I can get
rid of it?
Thanks,
Anne
I would ask your derm for samples of each of them. When I was first
diagnosed, the doctor gave me samples of MetroGel, MetroLotion, and
MetroCream. I got to pick which one I wanted for a prescription. My
skin was extremely oily at the time, so I went with the MetroGel.
I used MetroGel with good success for about 3 yrs. It stopped working
for me last fall. If I was to try it again, I'd go for the
MetroLotion. My skin isn't is combination now (oily and dry in
places).
You would be very wise to ask the doctor for samples before
committing to costly prescriptions. I made the mistake of trusting
my derm. and it was an expensive mistake. I will follow my own
advise next time! :)
My ocular symptoms are mostly lid burning, a little swelling,
increase sensitivity in the eye area, and dry eyes, esp when I spend
a lot of time on the computer. I use Eye Scrub (available at most
drugstores) 1/2x day and that helps tremendously.

I had a bad experience with the lotion. While I don't consider myself to have
oily skin it still clogged my pores. Not only did it do nothing for the
exsisting pustules, new ones actually arose. I have never tried the gel but had
I known there was a gel, at the time, I would have opted for it. You are very
savvy to question lotion vs. gel.
To recover from the episode with the lotion I corrected the problem with a
wonderful mask by Clear Logix called the Oil Absorbent Acne Mask and Nightime
Acne Serum. It cleared up the pustules in a few days.
Good luck with your treatment. As you can see by this board, much is trial and
error.
Susan
The stiefel website seems to be out of date.
You can get some info from those who sell it online, like
dermstore.com and dermadoctor.com
Here's what's on the box:
Active Ingredient: Pyrithone zinc 2 percent
Inactive: cetostearyl alcohol, cocamidipropyl betaine, corn startch,
disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate, FD&C blue no 1, fragrance, glycerin,
hydrogented caster oil, mineral oil, PEG-14M, silicon dioxide, sodium
potassium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, trisodum HEDTA, water
The bar is blue in color and really mild.
I want re-emphazied that I'm only using on the lower part of face for
a weird form of dermatitis, not PF, but it does seem to be helping.

I have experienced for about the last decade progressively worsening symptoms
of blepharitis, including the following: nearly constant eye discomfort;
gritty feeling in the eyes; waking up in the morning feeling as though my
eyes are being stuck with needles; "oil slicks" that blur vision and are a
symptom of malfunctioning meibomian glands. It began ten years ago as mild
discomfort and has progressed to something I must battle faithfully every day
by using warm compresses, eye washes, and artificial tears. Others use
doxycycline or perhaps low-dose accutane to bring the disease under control;
prescription drugs, unfortunately, will like be my next step, too.
I have read about additional symptoms, such as sensitivity to light, in Dr.
Nase's book. Dr. Nase's book offers detailed descriptions of possible
treatments for ocular rosacea. It takes a great deal of research and work,
but I'm convinced that with enough effort, ocular rosacea can be sent into
remission.
I'm wondering if metrocream can cause clogged pores.
My skin is not too oily but many products break me out.
The doctor thought the gel might be too drying so thought
I should use the cream.

I have heard a few references to ocular symptoms related to rosacea.
What kind of symptoms have you experienced (or heard of)?
Thanks!
Thanks so much for all the information you have given. Bear
with me. I am trying to learn as much as possible in a short time
about this dreadful condition I've found myself in.
Right now I am a little confused. You say you went the natural
route yet speak of using Metrogel a pharmacutical cream. Are you
currently using it in conjunction with the tea tree/emu salve or is
that all you use? I have just found out that Metrogel and Noritate
are virtually the same product according to this helpful website...
http://xenical.drugs.com/xq/cfm/pageID_0/htm_D03208T1.htm/bn_Noritate/
qx/index.htm Here's what it says:
METROGEL
Generic Name: metronidazole topical (me troe NI da zole)
Brand Names: Metrocream, Metrogel, Metrolotion, Noritate
I am on Noritate at the moment and stopped using it because it
didn't do anything for the pustules. Almost the moment I started
using Clear Logix with salicyic acid acne night treatment the
pustules began to go away. 5 days later they are down to small
pastules, a big improvement. Now it could be that the Noritate just
finally kicked in since it says that it takes 3 weeks for
improvement. To be on the safe side I will probably use it
sporatically.
It makes sense that the emu/teatree oil salve would be more
healing and less irritating than pure teatree. I'm going to try
it!!! Thanks again for all your helpful info!!! I will keep you all
posted as to how well it works for me. Promise!
Best regards,
Susan
I've always suspected that my case might be somehow related to
yeast, only because yeast caused many other problems for me
over the years and because of the yeast/sugar connection. I
mentioned it once to a derm and she shrugged it off and said
something like: some people think yeast might be related to
rosacea. **But neither she or any other derm I have ever been to
has taken a sample to view under the microscope**
And here's the thing that really bothers me: if they diagnose you
with rosacea, these doctors suggest washing face with Cetaphil
(made by Galderma), moisturizing face with Cetaphil moisturizer
(made by Galderma), applying topical Metro medication (made by
Galderma), and sometimes topical Desowen steroid (made by
Galderma). I am really uncomfortable with the relationships that
doctors have with pharmaceutical companies. I recently heard on
NPR that the New England Journal of Medicine had to change their
editorial policy of not allowing doctors receiving money from drug
companies to write articles. The reason they had to change this
policy was because these days *they can't find any doctors that
are not being paid*.
I have just moved to a new state and need to find a new derm. I
will be asking each one to test my skin for overproduction of yeast
and the one that does it will be my doctor.
Thanks for the info,
Connie
Wow, thats unbelievable.. How could my derm be so wrong? Isn't Pitysprorum
Folliculitus relatively common? How could he not know you can just scrape
some skin and observe it under a microscope? (I'm not saying you're wrong,
I've been screwed over by doctors more times than I can count.. but this is
just another one that goes into the hall of fame...) Do you happen to know
if the test performed has a certain name? I know they just looked under a
microscope, but could I go back to my derm and say "run ....." or "check
for ....." He probably wouldn't listen if I asked him to scrape my skin and
check for round things. I'd make an appointment with a new derm ASAP if I
thought any of them were any better, but this guy isnt the only one I've
seen.. I think almost all of them are ding-dongs
Last week I ordered a ZNP bar by Dermazinc. Is that an ok one to use? I
hear the regular ZNP bar can cause alot of skin irritation? So I am
concerned that might just cause more problems? But I don't really know..
Anyway, this is the link. is the other ZNP bar better?
http://www.sanavita.com/dermazinc/dsoap.htm
Anyway, thanks for being here.
Adam:
My friend went to 3-4 derms trying to get help, and her problem did
get worse after she started antibiotics. It only subdued a little
when she got a yeast infection and they gave her a 7-day oral yeast
med, then for a few days her skin got better---you would think they
could have figured it out ;)
Anyway, her new derm just scraped some few flakesfrom her skin, put
it under the microscope and they both looked at it, tons of round
things, more on the slide than should have been there. That's how
the derm knew it was too much. Didn't take a fancy test or a lot of
expensive meds to fix. She's delirously happy. Strongly recommend
you get a new derm who is up to speed. Most are just too brainwashed
by the pharmaceutical companies to use their med heads. If they don't
know, open a god-damn book for christ's sake!
At least try the ZNP bar (can buy it at any drugstore) until you can
find a new derm/doctor. You can at least get some relief. Always,
always, always get a second/third opinion.
Now you know why I was banned from the New England Medical Center
Derm department, bunch of ding-dongs.

scraping?!?!?!?! Are you kidding me?! I have gone to my doctor and
my derm about this like five times each probably... My acne problem
looks EXACTLY like Pitysprorum folliculitus, even my doctor told me
it looks more like folliculitus than acne. And it didnt start until
AFTER being on antibiotics, which do not cause acne, but DO cause
yeast problems. I even have an itchy scalp, where a bunch of them
also are (if you part the hair you can sometimes see them).
My derm told me the ONLY way to test for pitysprorum folliculitus is
to culture some pustules.. and in order to have enough he'd have to
culture at least 30 or 40 pustules... and I don't have alot of
those.. so he said he couldn't test me! Now I hear it can cause
flushing/papules/rash... Everything I have! And I get rashes on my
body now too.. so I know its beyond Rosacea.. and my two main
triggers are heat and sweat. Is there really a simple skin test

Yes,that is what I am using and Im sorry if you feel that this is too good
to be true.
Most of you think that when it is somehting NATURAL and SIMPLE and
INEXPENSIVE!.lol
Again,my diet has my complexion CLEAR (read my past posts)and the tea tree/emu
oil has STOPPED the pastules from ever returning!.
It works.
Pure tea tree oil can be very HARSH to use on its own BUT used in a SALVE and
combined with EMU OIL(which dont clog pores) you have a EXCELLENT ,WONDERFUL
formula for all kinds of
skin conditons not just rosacea.
How bad did I have pastules you ask?.
They were VERY stubborn as my rosacea was moving into the MODERATE stage.
I took charge of it(not with antibitotics) but with a natural diet (read my
previous posts)and
with NATURAL *topical* remedies like HERBACORT and TEA TREEE EMU OIL by Kayla.
I hope that answers your questions.
Read my previous posts for my diet!.
I have noticed that this forum is NOT very actice.
New ones come and go every day and the people that I talked to only a
month ago in deep conversation have not been seen here since.
They just dissappear.
They gave me their e-mails and I wrote them as requested.
I answer all their questions then their gone.
Then new ones come here and I have to *repeat* myself all over again on my
natural remedies.
Are any of the older ones STILL here? lol
Did you leave or are you just LURKING in the background?
It just seems I am the only one of the original ones that are here any more!.
If your there folks SHOUT! lol
Bye for now
Marilyn
Its too bad this forum does not stay more ACTIVE.
Tree Tree Oil - I tried it several years ago, at first I got better then a
lot worse. My husband hated the smell.
Metrogel - I've used metrogel since 1980, recently though I think I've
developed an allergy to it I've broken out in little bitty "bumps" it cleared
up when I quit using the metrogel but then the rosacea got worse. I waited 2
weeks then tried it again yesterday and by yesterday pm I had the tiny bumps
again (I'd call it a rash but I'm not sure). I have a derm appt Mon. (new
derm in town keep your fingers crossed) so maybe she'll help.
Reading the posts the thing I've noticed over time is that it seems like no
matter what we do the rosacea has a mind of it's own. Sometimes better
sometimes worse. Four years ago I was under more stress than I ever imagined
I could bear and had great skin (isn't stress a trigger?) then it seems I can
do everything "right" and suddenly have a flare up that takes me months to
"get over" (back to I can live with this at this level if I have enough
makeup). It seems like rosacea goes into "remission" then comes out again (I
hate to call it remission because it never goes away). Has anyone else
noticed this? I was diagnosed in 1980 and until then had wonderful skin, got
lots of compliments on my skin and never wore makeup because I didn't need
it.
sorry to be so long winded

I may have spelled it incorrectly. Its fairly common problem, but a
lot of derms never think to do quick skin scrape and check under the
microscope. It causes flushing, flaking, papules, sometimes a rash,
triggered by heat, sweat, sometimes spicy food. But its kinda itchy
like seb derm or ezcema. Can also affect the scalp. Its my
understanding that PF usu occurs on the body, not the face, which is
why do many derms misdiagnose it. My friend only had it on her face -
that poor girl went thru 6 months of hell, treatments, topicals,
drugs, (and Accupunture!) only to find out what she had was simply an
overgrowth of yeast on her face.
My concern is that many people with Perioral Dermatitis (PD) might be
able to get help w/o the 3 months of antibiotics if the derms would
check their skin closely. Of course, I just started the treatment
for PD, and I think this is tangentially related to my rosacea.
Still, I had to experiment from a friends diagnosis, after I gave up
on 2 different derms diagnosis bec it was the region (my lower face)
that kept them in the box. But the jury is still out, I'm still
experimenting with the zbar and lamisil.

Let me know!
I don't think so or at least can't find any info relating PF to the
eyes. My friend only 1-2 episodes of ocular problems, but she also
had bad allergies. The derm thought it was just allergies.
I have ocular symptoms that are defintely attributable to Rosacea.
symptoms?
What brand do you get and where do you get it? Is it one cream or
two? When and how do you apply? Are you taking any other
prescription oral antibiotics or just using the creams? How bad was
your acne/postules before using the emu/tea tree oil? How bad is the
redness from your rosasea and does it help or make the redness
worse? Enough questions for you???? It is exciting to hear of your
success. Bear with me, I just want to get this flare-up down to a
managable level and the dermatologist did nothing for me. I have just
started to use a product called ClearLogix Acne Night Serum with the
active ingredient salicylic acid for 3 days and have more success
with it controlling the pastules than 4 weeks of the dermatologist's
prescriptions. They are completely gone except for a few small
slightly raised bumps. Prior to using the ClearLogix I was beginning
to feel hopeless. I'm looking for something to put on during the day
as a moisturizer and under make-up, if possible. Heck, if I could get
rid of the pastules completely, I would go without makeup! Wouldn't
that be nice!

Can't hurt to visit a derm and get a skin scrape. Should take all of
5 minutes, and treatment could be OTC. Though sounds like the sporox
is better than the lamisil, and the pills would really help. PF does
tend to look like acne.
Think about it, the Diet helps in reducing sugar and carbs, which
yeast love to live on. So even if its PF, the Diet still helps.
I use to get Tinea Versicolor (TV) on my back, you know, those
patches of skin that are lighter than elsewhere on your body and
don't tan (which I never do anyway, ;). Turns out Seb Derm, PF and TV
are all caused by excessive yeast/fungi, so they are kinda of treated
in the same way. When I cut back on the sugar/carbs, I noticed that
the light spots on my back weren't spreading. So, now I trying the
znp bar and lamisil on my back as recommended by dermadoctor.com to
get rid of what's left.
However, my rosacea symptoms are classic -- sensitive skin, occular,
red papules on cheek, but very little redness. I honestly think my
acne is just adult acne. Fortunately, I can tolerate some of the more
intense acne meds.

archives.. I've posted about it a handful of times, because that seems like
what I have. I had no idea that can cause a rosacea-like redness, I just
thought thats what was causing my "acne".. because its the only thing that
made sense based on my symptoms. That would be ironic if that were my
entire problem.

GT:
You are telling me something I have never heard of before
that Pitysrosporum Folliticulitis has the same symptoms as rosacea?
That is all news to me. I haven't seen it discussed in Pascoe's group
and I just did a search in the message archive using the name of the
Admittedly, the site does comes across with that old "used-car sales"
approach, ha! Not enough info on it for me to even check out. I
strongly believe that credible mfgs will spend to $$ to market
responsibly, and that their websites will reflect this.
FYI:
On a similar note, I had a friend who thought she had a really bad
case of rosacea, but recently found out she has Pitysrosporum
Folliticulitis, the symptoms are exactly the same, PF is an
overproduction of yeast on the skin. The new derm she went to just
happen to have gone to a conference where this was the main topic
(misdiagnosis of Rosacea). He prescribed ZNP Bar (OTC used for
dandruff and Seb Derm), a 5 day course of Loprox (antifungal pill)
Sporox (antifungal cream - like Lamisil), and her symptoms cleared up
immediately.
I've been suffering from what the derm thought was perioral
dermatitis near the mouth and chin area and have been unable to treat
it (only keeping it at bay with Protopic). I refused antibiotics
unless its life threatening. Since the symptoms were similiar to seb
derm and similar to what my friend had, I decided to try to the ZNP
bar, Lamisil AT, a mild Salicylic acid, which I used occassionally
anyway, and holy moly, my symptoms are clearing up. I sure I have
rosacea, but at least this is one less thing to worry about.
GT
Susan,
I have heard of tea tree oil, but also heard that it makes rosacea
worse. I really don't know. I was just afraid to try it. I tried
azelaic acid and I liked that, but it didn't take care of the acne.
I'm taking doxycycline and using Rosula lotion topically now. I have
no noticeable acne. But, the doxycycline makes me so sick. I'm seeing
a doctor in May and I'll ask her about the new laser for acne
(Smoothbeam or ClearLight). I was hoping that would work for me and I
could get off of these darn antibiotics.
Sorry that you and Lora are dealing with the acne. That's my
situation too!!
Tricia
Hi Susan,
You have exactly my same problem. I have had a little luck with azealic acid,
but it stings when i put it on and so I dont very often. Let me know if you find
something that helps the breakouts, it is sooo hard to cover them. Thanks and
good luck!
Lora
Anyone out there try tea tree oil for acne rosacea? Here is what a
herbal website had to say about it:
'Helps to oxygenate the skin cells and to repair damaged skin caused
by the sun, acne, dry skin, fungus, etc helps to clear dandruff, lice
and seborrhea when added to shampoos.'
I have also heard others say it works well for rosacea-acne. Please
let me know if any of you have tried this. I have have used
salicylic acid on my small cystic-type eruptions with some success
and was hoping that the tea tree oil will finish the job. I have a
lot of sun damage on my cheek where the erruptions occur and don't
want anything harsh. I am doing so much better after stopping the
Noritate cream. That only made the acne eruptions last longer! The
acne is the big problem for now not the redness, although that is a
problem too. At least I can cover the redness with makeup. That is
very difficult to do when one has eruptions, if you catch my drift.
Any other suggestions or success will be appreciated!
Susan
This is my first reply and you will thank me for it. I read all of the
emails and I feel obligated to tell you about this product. This
product made my rosacea ATLEAST 10X WORSE. So, if you cannot tell, I
STRONGLY URGE YOU TO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. I've tried several "demodex"
type products and ALL made my face horrible.
Like many others on this board, I have had IPL done and have shown great
results. I also use minocycline (SP?) and noritate. I know many of you
do not like antibiotics, but vanity is my favorite sin :)~. This
combination has knocked out almost all signs of my rosacea (for now).
I did not buy a package for IPL as she instructed me that not everyone
needs the same amount of treatments. The lady that does my treatments
used to work for the company that makes the IPL machine and used to
instruct doctors on how to use them. She told me that most people only
need 3-4 treatments. I have had 2 done so far at a cost of $250 each
and am thinking about a 3rd (even though my face is fine) in the near
future. My only horrible trigger is hot showers :*(.
Oops about me, I'm a 24 year old male...yes a little young for rosacea
with Scottish ancestry. I've had rosacea for 3yrs and it was first
diagnosed as sebhorric* dermatitis. My rosacea was moderate but hastely
worsening since a car accident. My savior was IPL.
I hope this may help someone or save someone from their symptoms
worsening. Not everyone reacts to the same triggers and the "demodex"
soap may help some of you, just not me. Good luck and Godspeed
Charles
I found this site in a search which you may find interesting, offering a
soap that claims to treat
"human demodex parasite and restore the skin to its natural beauty"
http://www.chinamystique.com/
I have no idea if this soap helps control rosacea, but I imagine
that in time we will hear about it more and if any rosaceans
have results with it.....

When you say you have used the hydrocortisone before, was it in this
part of your body? The tissues under the eyes are very, very
sensitive and vulnerable. From your symptoms it sounds like you may
have Rosacea and the hydrocortisone may be the culprit, but I'm not
an expert.
Also wondering if you have any Caucasian in your genetic
backround?

Is it possible to get rosacea as a teenager, with a dark complexion
(I'm half Asian), and from the sun? I got a 1st degree sunburn in
February that went away after a few weeks, but now I get a bright
redness under both eyes from eating spicy foods or from limited sun
exposure. Could this be rosacea? I also used over-the-counter
hydrocortisone for 2 weeks to treat the burn, but I've used that
before without any side effects.
Has anyone tried any of Linda Sy's skin products, the zinc o cream
looked particuarly interesting. I've had rosacea for probably about
10 years now & have been faithful to cetaphil cleanser. I've tried
aesthitician therapies with fruit acids (very expensive) and
irritating, metrogel did't really do a thing for me. Now I'm using 1%
Noritate cream which I don't really see any improvement. I just
turned 50 & frankly very discouraged as this rosacea continues to get
worse & worse. I have ocular involvement, & I guess you would stage
me at a 4. I just ordered Dr. Nace's book & I hope this will help me
to get this under control. I'm also going to meet with a doc next
week to assess for a fotofacial. Anyone had any expereices with this

hello,
The "drug class"of cloderm is unfortunately CORTICOSTEROIDS. Check
the following web site (or many other sites as a matter of fact).
Thinning of the skin is one of the side effects so be very careful.

I have had rosacea for at least 7years but it was mild enough that I
did not seek treatment until the last year. I think stress has
really aggravated the situation and I have redness beyond my nose and
cheeks and chin and above my eyebrows. I struck out with Metrogel it
made things alot worse. My Doc put me on Doxicycline but it was not
improving so I switched to Monocyline recently.
He also put me on Cloderm which is a non florinated steroidal cream
which he states does not thin the skin. I have heard bad things
about steroid products but my derm told me it is a new product that
will not thin the skin. I wander if my derm knows what he is doing
based on some of the postings that I have read but I am going to try
it.
I asked him about nonirritating SPF lotions and he told me it is all
trial and error. I am looking for something that definitely will not
irriate and will not aggravate my redness.

Hi,
Brady, if you get this.....has my email from the group been bouncing?? I
Metrogel worked for me for about 3 yrs. Then, it just started
irritating my skin and making things worse. I haven't used in several
months.
I have been under tremendous stress and my doctor gave me some Oxazapam... not
sure if that's the correct spelling but you get my drift. It's an anti-anxiety
pill but it has helped 100% with the redness, flaring, burning and pain. I guess
it was mostly stress that was causing my flares. I have also stopped using any
soap on my face and have been using warm compresses on my eyes which helps a
great deal. I was beginning to think that it was the cat dander that I am
exposed to and it still might be part of it, but for now I am so happy that I
found this pill. I switched to NeoStrata Anti redness cream from Rosacure but
it's made by the same company in canada at least. I think it is stronger then
the rosacure. However, it is not something I can stay on for a long time but I
will have to cross that bridge when I get to it..... Happy Easter to all of you!

Hello
You say that Metrogel made your skin WORSE!
I read a lot of that!
Metrogel has ALWAYS worked for me!
It is suppose to be ANTI-ROSACEA!
So why do I read so many bad testimonials?
How long did you use it for
Is there anyone here that Metrogel DID work for other than me?
lol
Hi Sheila,
I've heard of Aurora but don't know anyone who's tried it. It
doesn't sound like it worked too well.
Maybe IPL is the single most effective treatment for some people's
rosacea, but as we all know, what works for one person might not
work for another.

Hi all,
I had my 5th session today. It went much like the
other sessions. She worked with the lazer and pulsed
light. Come to find out, in spite of all my
questioning, I found out today that the woman who
works on me, Trudy, was NOT trained by Dr Bitter Jr as
I had understood from our conversation. I was sure I
had directly asked this question, but, oh well... Dr
Hill, whose clinic it is was trained by him and the
other woman who gives these sessions was trained by
Bitter. I learned today that they use a variety of
techniques - not just Bitter's approach. When Dr Hill
was trained Bitter was using only pulsed light. Trudy
showed me photos of a woman that went through 10
treatments with Bitter's technique. She looked pretty
darn good but there was a bit of pinkness still. Trudy
said it was a good process, but they added the lazer
because Bitter's process was quite slow to show
results. The lazer speeds it up a lot AND it is the
most painful part of it. I would opt for pain with
faster progress and less financial outlay though. The
rapid progress I am experiencing she says is faster
than usual. Of course this is a thrill for me, but I
thought I should tell you all. It is likely I will not
have to do 10 sessions as we had thought. That will be
a thrill for our finances. Deb
Hello,
Has anyone heard of RFL (radio something-or-other aka Aurora)
laser? I'm in Vancouver, Canada. My MD just came back from a
meeting in Anaheim (fyi neither Bitter sr nor jr was there) and said
that the MDs in the states don't have it, but he is pushing it now
as better than Photoderm/fotofacial. I just had a full-face Tx
yesterday and boy did it hurt (much worse than the IPLs). Anyway, I
was SOOOO red after the Tx that it seems kind of counterintuitive to
get so red in order to reduce redness!
I am wondering about all this laser stuff because I've already had 6
full-face IPL treatments with pretty much no results. I'm beginning
to think that I'm dealing with bozos who see a person they can
milk. Also I keep putting all my hope in different things (ETS-
clamping, IPL, clonidine, etc) and they keep coming up as no help.
Dr. Nase said that the IPL was the single most effective Tx for
rosacea - and I keep on trying, but I'm starting to get discouraged!

shocked at me, becuase I've had no cravings at all - He said when you
get hungry we had to get out of the way! Because I would get mean
and nasty and had to have some of those carbs I thought were good for
me! I've seen more improvement on my face in four days then I did
six weeks of metrogel. The day I started the diet I stopped
metrogel. I know it will take longer then 30 days for me to get my
face in shape because my rosacea is really bad. But to already see
some improvement gives me a hope of happiness I can not explain. I'm
looking forward to looking like a human being and not a monstor!
Thanks for the jokes - I'll be thinking of some as I experience my

Thought I would post some light humor for those in the throws of

Nimeera,
Thanks for staying with the group and giving such sound advice. As I
have stated in the book,
after the thirty days everyone will just have to experiment with eating
more carbs until they
figure out how much is tolerable until their rosacea breaks out. If
everyone was a dancer like
you with the energy output you demand on your body we could all tolerate
more carbs. So,
like you have clearly stated, it depends on each individual to figure
out what to eat after the
thirty days. The main point is that you can control your rosacea with
food and drink. There
are also multiple others ways to control rosacea which may be advisable
for different individuals
and when we discuss these others ways within the group along with tips
on our different
diets we can pool the information here for support.
The reason I have made the Rosacea Diet so drastic during the thirty
days is to prove beyone
any doubt that it works! Some have actually reported an increased
energy level after the
Rosacea Diet. Obviously you are a super energetic person requiring
carbohydrates to burn,
but you have found the complex carbs to work for you and still control
your rosacea. Please
keep informing the group of your findings. You do have a point that for
some individuals
a more gradual approach to the diet may be indicated depending on the
results the first few
days. In such cases it may require sixty, ninety, or more days to
achieve rosacea control along
with health.
Brady Barrows
Just to echo Nimeera's comment, I am also one of those folks who like
to exercise a lot and had to increase my carb intake to keep from
passing out! I can tolerate a moderate amount of non-refined carbs
without my Rosacea getting worse, but the sugar is a another matter.
Once I eliminated sugar, I noticed I had a INCREASE in energy level.
I still try to keep the carb count low, but on active days of
running, power walking or/and weight lifting, I need the extra
energy. But like the others who posted, on inactive days, esp if for
several days, I lower the carbs intake quite a bit.
paxebaby,
if I drank four beers I would break out with rosacea it would takes
weeks to
clear up, not to mention high carbs! Just keep on the diet and keep
reporting
in.....
Brady
I think the lamp could aggravate your skin. The electrolysis itself
might aggravate it as well. It seems like the electrolysis would heat
up your skin.

IPL [Intensity Pulsed Light] therapy is the latest treatment for

to remove wrinkles and blemishes but has been helpful in removing the
damages caused by rosacea. You can get a number of links explaining it

Tom,
I've never had any boils. I took a course of Accutane before I got
rosacea. I had the cystic acne. I think Accutane should only be used
if you have really large cystic acne. That's what I took it for and
it was a God send to me.
However, I developed rosacea after taking Accutane. I kind of see
Accutane as contributing to my development of rosacea. The Smoothbeam
wasn't available when I took Accutane.
I'm actually going to see a doctor about Smoothbeam. I have an
appointment in May. I have flushing/blushing and also pustules. The
acne component is worse right now. I can keep the redness under
control, but not the acne. I'm taking antibiotics all the time for
the acne and I'd really like to try the laser and see if that makes a
difference.
I was considering a course of Accutane when I found out about the new
laser.
Tricia
Hi Tom,
Strangely enough my husband was given the booklet on acutane yesterday. Have you seen it yet. What you have to sign and read before the prescription is even given to you. I left the office in tears. He is 58 years old and healthy but it seems this can really make you ill. Even destroy you insides and even if you stop taking the drug damage is irriversible. I actually have filled an Rx and had it in the house since January and would not allow him to take it. I feel just the way that you do. I am horrified of him using it. In fact the doctor wants to put him on 80 mg. per day. The first doctor said just 20 mg. per day. The complete course of treatment is 5 months and there is no guarantee that it won't come back.
Please any information you should come up with let us know, or what you decide to do.
Lots of luck.
Sue
Thanks everyone for your comments about the first day of what to
expect message I posted. Yes Brady I did read it was a hard diet to
do, but I thought that was because I would fight temptation! I
thought I would be craving pizza or something. Maybe that will come
later. The great thing is I never felt hungry in between meals, but I
did feel that strange feeling in my body "a strange dizziness" I'm
going to stick with it because loosing my looks to age 40 was hard
enough, but then to be given ugly bumps all over my face and look
like a monster has just been devastating! I went to the doctor and
too was given tetracycline and metrogel! I hate drugs and don't want
to take them. The metrogel seems to have done nothing in seven
weeks. Since reading all the websites and seeing that I must change
my lifestyle with food and maybe use some type of drugs to control
rosacea, I'm choosing food first. Mostly I was just wondering if
lots of people felt odd the first week. If that's normal then I'm
not worried. I didn't talk to my doctor about the diet. My blood
presser was normal a few weeks ago. My weight is around 160lbs. I
witnessed my brother's seizure and it was a horrible sight! But he
was drinking a quart a day or more of vodka. Besides eating all the
foods with high carbs I was drinking about 4 beers a night average.
Anyway I made it through one day so I'm going for the next.
Has anyone experience facial boils with acne rosacea? I had two in
the last 2-1/2 months and they are no fun.
I'm considering the new laser treatment called SmoothBeam which was
recently approved for acne treatment to reduce sebacous gland
activity. It is supposed to work wonders for acne. I don't have
flushing/blushing, just pimples/pustules and very oily skin, so I'm
thinking this may help me.
My derm is suggesting Accutane (he doesn't do Smoothbeam, I have to
go elsewhere for that). I've heard the side-effect can be bad (hair
loss, sore joints, high triglycerides, chapped skin). Is it really
that bad or should I consider it?
Tom

Hi Lone,
I agree with u.
I didnt expect everyone to turn up with the same blood type. But still
according to the percentages I would like to see a similiar number of people
with A like O. For some reason the majority is still A+ twice more if not 3
times more. I will post the counts in a few more days. I also recieved

Im sure it doesnt mean much as we can see here all kinds of blood types but
it is interesting.
I did started to woner if im not sure to b A+ or AB. I need to check that
out.
(no one here with AB??)
Im mostly curious about those who got rosacea after/ during accutane what
was their blood type?
Thank u for the input,

Does Dermalogica or Proactive help at all?
Thanks.

Hi there
Monday was the first day and I had followed the diet accordedly
except I used different protein food. I started to feel better and
also my husband does too. We are on day three and going on four
tomorrow.
In exchange for pork bacon and sausage, we use turkey bacon or turkey
sausage.
Both my husband and I love eggs so we use it alots for breakfast.
This week have been the warmest weather so we have been grilling the
meat with veggies outside on the bbq gas grill. It was soo good!
We also noticed my face is not as red as it was so slowly it looks
like it getting a little better.
Take care and look forward to hear from you!

Hi all,
for any one interested to read about IPL photorejuvenation. This site also talks about rosacea..its in English (but I found the same rosacea woman like in the former site I sent earlier...funny..its probably a picture the IPL developer sends around).
http://www.aestheticbeautycentre.co.uk/Photorejuvination.htm
Violla
Hi All,
I found only one site in Israel explaining the IPL photorejuvanation, it also has some good photos (some look like rosacea but the word rosacea is not mentioned any where on that site):
http://www.sodot-hayofi.co.il/tipul2.asp
They do not use the term photoderm like most of u on the board but they use the machine name "Quantum" when refering to IPL.
U probably wont understand whats written because its in hebrew. So I shal translate:
THe picture on the left is before treatment.
It explains that the pulsed light worm up the collagen fibers and this cause the collagen to renew itself.
By this way it is able to stabalize the skin colour and also renews the skin texture.
The quantum SR treats:
Age spots
Old spots
Redness
Blood vessels
Wrinkles (the small kinds)
Pigmentation
Birth Marks
Renew of the face skin
Rejuvenation of the face
The clinic performing these treatments is new and they seem to have special prices for the holidays.
They also have a package for 10 treatments (I wonder why 10, how can we know in advance we will need 10??).
They also treat veins with YAG (nd 1064nm).
Now I ask u: Look at the pictures, they look much better but still if I reffer to the first with rosacea I dont see a complete clearance.(but it also did not say how many treatmts was after?? mayb its only one who knows?! if its only one than their is a huge diffrence)
Would u call it clear??? can photoderm cause some success to people and have their face look clear and normal.
I would say my face does not look at all bad red like the photo before trx but more in the middle towards the after picture unless I have a blush or flush from over heat or excersize.
Another question:
Do u notice the woman has no papules pastules (not that I can see) but the skin is not smooth its bumpy, I have this too from the rosacea, why is that?? what r those little bumps?
Thank u all for reading I hope this may help any who wanted to know more about IPL (at least I know now its called QUANTUM and not Epilight).
Any comments are welcome.
Violla
I had some weird problems during the first day of the diet too. They were
bad enough that I had to stop the diet and I haven't resumed it yet. What
I'd recommend based on my own experiences is not to change your diet so
drastically so quickly. Start by gradually eating more veggies and less
carbs. (at snacktime substitute carrot sticks for potato chips, and replace
rice or potatoes or whatever with a salad at dinner. (Personally I try to
eat a salad every day now, it seems to help.. perhaps its the folic acid?)
Then once you've gotten used to it, if you want to feel free to give the
diet another try in a few weeks. Anyway this is just my opinion and I'm
sure some of the other people in the group will probably have better advice.

I wonder if any connection was made between rosaceans to blood type???
I just recieved very interesting information about avoiding foods for some blood types. Like People with type A should avoid take Vitamin A because it may damage the blood vessels. In my case high dose accutane is deritive of Vit A really damaged my blood vessels!!!!
Can u all send a note what is your blood type??? (It may b interesting to check if rosaceans are more of a typical blood type, I guess some high researches already checked this out..but any way..lets look it out too).
Thank u all,
Violla
Is there truly such as a thing as remission with Rosacea? I am on oral and
topical antibiotics and a have also tried a number of over the counter
topicals. Nothing seems to help at all. I just went back on birth control
and am hoping that will help. I know my rosacea is hormonally related as it
really gets bad the second half of my cycle. I'm hoping the bc will help.
I am also hoping to go into remission if there is such a thing!!!! Give me
hope!
I've just finished the supper for the first day start. I've been
feeling sort of dizzy and a bit spacey sort of odd feeling the first
day of this test diet. I'm wondering about having a siesure. I'm
worried that going completely cold off sugar, because my brother had
a alcoholic siesure 4 days after he quit drinking. Though it's not
deadly, I don't want to be driving and have one. What strange things
may I expect this first week?
Thanks-
Hi Tricia,
Thanks for the info. I am very careful about sun exposure since I believe
it has worsened my rosacea in the past. We shall see what happens.
Incidentally, I am on Yasmin which has a different kind of progesterone in
that it acts as an anti-androgen, much like spironolactone. It is also a
potassium sparing diuretic. It has made my skin a little drier but in my
case that is a good thing.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I probably didnt explain myself...Ill try again:.
I know the treated areas are red-very red ..sure I put ice on the treated
area that redness goes away in an hour or 2. But Im not refering to the
treated area and not to that kind of extreme redness. im refering to all my
face.especially the untreated area..all myface lookes tanned after a few
hours especialy my cheek bones..yes they look like that because of the
rosacea but it gets worse after the electrolysis treatment (it is half an
hour treatment for me). The next day some little tiny papules comes out on
the cheeks!! until they are gone the next treatment adds new ones.
Lately my electrologist changed to a new lamp with a new screen and I think
this one is stronger because I really feel my cheeks itch from it.
Any way im going to apply sun block to the un-treated areas before I have
treatment.
BTW how many times a month do u go for treatment??
Any reason why u didnt try doing hair removal with laser??

Hi All,
This question is ment for any one who was on accutane (high dose) in the past and got rosacea in result:
Did u notice while treatment if your nose was dripping all the time and u couldnt go no where with out tissues???
Since I started to take the accutane in the winter I noticed this watter dripping from the nose all the time I thought it was some kind of cold. It didnt go away for months, I tried using coldex or stuff but they all dried me out more and did not help. So I left it to b.
I took accutane from January to June and my nose was dripping all those months during the whole course even if it was hot outside.
I went every where with tissues and people where sure I was sick. I was sure it was some kind of reaction while im on accutane but I didnt think of it as an alergic reaction. I asked the doctor what to do and he just said continue with the tissues.
Exactly one week after discontinuing the drug this side effect was gone completly (the only side effect that is gone I was left with all the rest till this day). Today I am sure the the watery nose was a sign for an alergic reaction to the accutane also Im sure the my very red face and all that was going on with it during treatment might definatly b part of that alergic reaction.
So I wonder if most normal people do not have rosacea from accutane and u do, did u by any vhance remember having a dripping water nose at that time???
I was thinking about this now after reading some posts about the connection between alergic reaction to foods causing flushing, blushing and even pastules and more...
Mayb the rosacea we got from accutane may also b a result of alergic reaction to it???
I hope I was able to explain myself.
Thank u
and
Best wishes
Violla
Debbie, I would be interested in knowing if the fotoderm sessions help with
the skin texture problems. I have very bumpy..larged pored skin. It is one
of the most aggravating factors of rosacea to me. I hate the acne which in
turn ends up scarring and making me very embarrassed about my skin. I could
handle this if it were only just red and without the acne. I would be
willing to do the photoderm providing that it helps my skin texture and pore
appearance. Thanks in advance-Alanna
Hi All,
I have completed 4 fotoderm sessions (as developed by
Dr Bitter Jr) and I thought I would share with
everyone my experience with it. It may not be for
everyone, and it is quite expensive, but it is like
magic and I have blessed the person who came up with
this idea for lazer use over and over again. For me,
it will be these sessions and the diet together that
will bring the rosacea back into control.
First a bit of background on my skin situation. The
rosacea I have is mostly vascular,(extreme) with some
acne rosacea. I occasionally have some very mild
occular symptoms. I have been on the rosacea diet
(strictly)for, I think, 2 years. I have found that I
can only eat about 40 - 50 carbs and not have acne
rosacea symptoms. I am less pink, but never have been
totally back to my pale self. I was not pink at all
before the onset of the rosacea. The carbs I can eat
so far have been limited to low carb vegetables. I was
able to 'get away with' a quarter of an apple once,
and haven't successfully eatten any grains at all.
(although I am planning on trying again, and eatting
many less carbs in general that day and seeing if that
may work) I can't eat any spicy things like pepper,
onions or garlic and frying things increases the
redness. Even if the acne doesn't get activated, the
redness does. And when the rednes gets really bad then
the acne part kicks in too. I am an extreme case is
what I am getting at. So I am going through these
fotoderm sessions as an adjunct to the diet. My guess
is that I may be able to expand it a bit, but probably
not much. I have been able to eat tofu since my 4th
session, which has been great. I wasn't able to before
without getting quite red.
The sessions cost (where I am going) about $300. a
session. The sessions last about an hour. I bought a
package of 5 to get this price. Probably someone less
vascular than me could get away with 5. I will need
8-10. My first session wasn't that painful, but ever
since then it has been really intense. That is because
I am so vascular I am told. They should get less
intense as time go on. I take the maximum you can take
of tylenol 3 before the sessions and apply a topical
anesthetic and it is still quite painful at times. For
me, it is like getting electrical shocks on your face.
My girfreind and I go and do our sessions back to back
and give each other foot rubs during the sessions. It
is distracting in a soothing way. I highly recommend
it. Afterwards I apply ice packs and am swollen for a
day or so. After the first 2 sessions I was very
swollen for several days, but after the last 2
sessions I am swollen for only a day afterwards. They
say that you usually don't see results until the 3rd
session. I was blessed with seeing results from the
first session and after each one it is like Christmas
to see the new results. The redness and the little
veins are disappearing. My old skin is reappearing. It
is like magic. It is amazing. It is worth the pain and
cost - for me. I realize now how much pressure I felt
in my face from the excess blood in my face - that is
gone. And the heat I felt from all that blood - is
gone. And the swelling from all the blood and heat in
my face - is gone. Some days I wake up and my skin
looks almost normal. I pretty much blend in with the
normal non-rosacea types - especially this time of
year when people are getting a bit more sun. It is a
relief to not get stared at or asked what is wrong
with my skin. All this makes it worth it for me. One
thing I want to clarify though is that it helps the
redness, but from my experience and from what a person
told me who had a series of sessions, it does not stop
the acne form of rosacea. That is why I say I think it
will be a combination of the diet and the fotoderm
that will be my ticket to normal looking skin. I am
told after 2 years or so you need a touch up session.
I am open to any questions anyone might have. Debbie
Brady,
Does this contain any artificial sweeteners?

Hi Kelly,
The only references I've ever seen to food allergies and a possible
link to rosacea is on the Rosacea-Ltd web site and I hope it's not a
copywrite issue, but here it is:
Food allergy flushing - Food allergy flushing is not rosacea,
although many people with rosacea also have food allergies. A food
allergy can cause redness, flushing, itching and fluid-filled
pustules to appear on the skin. Food allergies can also cause
itching, tearing and a discharge from the eyes. Please
consider 'food allergy testing' from your Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)
doctor to confirm which foods you are allergic to as you may not be
familiar with them. Some of the worst items are cantaloupes and
various melons as well as beef, pork, and chicken while fish very
rarely causes a flushing problem. Asthma and eczema may be triggered
or worsened by food allergies. For more information on food allergy
flushing see our Lifestyle Changes page. http://www.rosacea-
ltd.com/flushing.php3
Food Allergy Flushing: In our experience, many patients with
rosacea have other symptoms that suggest the diagnosis of food
allergy. The involvement of the central face has often been a puzzle
to some rosaceans. A red nose, cheeks and red ears act like warning
lights that turn on when a food reaction starts and the need to
identify reactive foods when this flushing or vascular dilation
occurs. Often, it is the symptoms of food allergy that motivate
people to start diet revision and an improvement in their rosacea
condition is noted along with improvement in other symptoms such as
gastrointentestinal disturbances, migraine headache, sinusitis, and
fatigue. http://www.rosacea-ltd.com/lifestyle.php3
Everyone's rosacea is different. I hope this helps.

Violla,
I was just tested for allergies yesterday and in my list of things
to avoid in the diet that the dr. (allergist) put me on was all B
viatiams. Don't know if it's a coincidence or if it could be but I
tested postive with a extreme allergy to Bakers yeast and he told me
to stay away from anything with Viatamin B along with a whole list
of foods as well.
Good Luck
Take care
Kelly

I was just wondering if any one in the group has been tested for
food allergies? I was diagnosed with Rosacea about two years ago
and have been trying to figure things that most often make me flare.
Well majority of what I have found are food products like wheat,
cereals, cakes, peanuts, and many other things after recently having
two very bad flares. My doctor thought they might be hives on my
face and sent me to an allergist for testing. And long behold I
have MAJOR food aller
